Even though USA Today can barely be called a newspaper (it's just
a colorful, shallow collection of sound-bites), it DOES have a large
national distribution.
The rating of **** (out of four) even beat out Carly Simon's compilation
album which only rated ***1/2 !
The sleeper album of the year comes from this respected Australian
singer/songwriter, whose previous Wanted Man made many '94
top 10 lists. The fuller-sounding Water, released in September
when it was overshadowed by top-40 blockbusters, is prime grown-up
rock: a dozen uncommonly resonant songs, played tight and written
deep. The lyrical title song addresses no less than the primal passages
of a man's life with stunning precision and not a drop of grandiosity.
Equally stunning are Blush, an erotic, driving rocker; the
raw I'll Forgive but I Won't Forget; the insistent Give
In to My Love; and Anastasia Changes Her Mind, a haunting
pop gem.
