RISING MOON

Paul Kelly/Bill Miller

We left the others in the fading light

Walked up that old road

On a warm summer night

You said let’s go higher

There’s a good chance that soon

We’ll get to see the rising moon

When we reached the quarry

We could feel the breeze

We stood there a moment

Searching the trees

Then suddenly we saw it

That big red glow

I took your hand and you didn’t let go

And my poor heart jumped out of my chest!

Yeah, my poor heart jumped right out of my chest!

That moon changed its colour

As it rose in the sky

And we changed each other

Under heaven’s bright eye

I might live to a hundred

I might die soon

But I’ll never forget that rising moon

Oh, my poor heart jumped out of my chest!

Yeah, my poor heart jumped right out of my chest!

Now you’ve gone

And left me staring at the horizon

Oh, my heart beats strong

Sometimes I just wish it would stop

But it keeps pumping on!

FINALLY SOMETHING GOOD

Paul Kelly

You’re a long cool drink of water on a blazing summer’s day

You’re autumn trees undressing in the month of May

Even in the winter-time, we don’t have to turn on the heat

You’re early spring-time blossoms floating on my street

Long, dark days have been withstood

Now there’s a change in my neighbourhood

Finally, something good!

On my lonely island every day I walked the strand

Mine the only footprints on the sand

It seemed that I would always be way beyond the pale

Until the day I saw your distant sail

I lit the fire from wild wood

You saw the plume, Oh, you understood

Finally something good!

Something good

Something good

Something good

This way comes!

FIREWOOD AND CANDLES

Paul Kelly/Bill Miller

Firewood and candles

On a winter Friday night

Waiting for my sweetheart

I’m gonna set the scene just right

Wine in the bottle

Paella cooking in the pan

Elvis on the stereo

I’m a man with a plan

Firewood and candles

Giving off a lovely light

And when she comes around

I hope she has an appetite

We’re gonna shut out the world

Forget about the TV news

Firewood and candles

Tonight they’re gonna see us through

We’re gonna talk a little

We’re gonna kiss a little and then some more

A whole lot more

I’m gonna show her I love her

Below and above her and a whole lot more

Firewood and candles

Making shadows on the wall

Is that the gods come to Earth

Or a mule kicking in our stall?

Making all these memories

Forever gonna keep us warm

When firewood and candles

Disappear in the storm

Yeah, we talk a little

We kiss a little and then some more

A whole lot more

Yeah, she knows I love her

Below and above her and a whole lot more

MY MAN’S GOT A COLD

Paul Kelly
Sung by Vika Bull

My man’s got a cold

Oh, such a cold

Could be the worst ever cold

In the history of the world

And I’ve got a front seat row

To the whole sorry show

My man’s got a cold

Everybody’s been told

Oh, he’s so completely woebegone

He don’t want to get it on

My man’s got a cold, mmmm…

My man’s got a bug

It’s a nasty little bug

And he’s taken every drug

But they just won’t kill that bug

Now he’s worried it might get worse

He’s thinking about the hearse

My man’s got a bug

And it’s got him in such a fug

Oh, is there nothing a body can do

Up against the man flu?

My man’s got a cold, mmmm…

My man’s got a cough

It’s a stubborn kind of cough

He just can’t shake it off

It’s raspy and it’s rough

He’s off his wine and bread

He even said no to head!

My man’s got it bad

Like nobody else has ever had

Well, if he don’t come ‘round soon

I just might have to put him down soon!

My man’s got a cold, mmmm…

ROCK OUT ON THE SEA

Paul Kelly/Bill Miller
(For Marina Abramović)

I gave you a rose and a feather

Scissors and a whip and scalpel too

I gave you a gun and a bullet

A pot o’ honey and my body all up to you

I told you “Now we need an actor

And that’s you and you’re gonna write the play

Everything is on the table

You can play this anyhow, anyway”

Now my heart is just like a rock out on the sea

Now my heart is just like a rock out on the sea

You slipped across the border

From kind caress to cruel attack

You got no clue how you made it

Many roads lead there but, I tell you, none lead back

Oh my heart is just like a rock out on the sea

Oh my heart is just like a rock out on the sea

I came to you with my wounds a-weeping

I came to you looking for your eyes

You dropped your head, you couldn’t leave here quick enough

And went back to your not so brilliant disguise

O my heart is just like a rock out on the sea

O my heart is just like a rock out on the sea

LEAH: THE SEQUEL

Paul Kelly/Bill Miller/Roy Orbison

I came to on the beach, somebody pushing up and down on my chest

I was coughing salty water, up above me

Leah looking mighty distressed

She said “Baby, you’re so lucky, you nearly went to your final rest!”

My hand was clenched, I was still holding that pearl so tight

When they prised my fingers open,

Leah’s dark eyes opened up so wide

I heard her say “I love you baby, O my heart is nearly

bursting my side!”

Leah, Leah…

Now Leah’s really mine, we got a hut and a boat by the sea

And every Saturday night she wears that pearl for everybody to see

She says “This is my man! Look at what he did for me!”

Leah, Leah…

Now I’m working in the cannery, hosing down the floor

for her old man

And I’m hoping I get used to it, ‘cause Leah’s got a ten year plan

She’s hidden my snorkel, says I’m never going diving again

Leah, Leah….

LETTER IN THE RAIN

Paul Kelly

The morning bright and still

Has laid a frost across the hill

And the glory of it takes my breath away

The birdsong in the trees

Floating on the ghost of a breeze

Says “You’re lucky to be a creature alive today”

The rosy-fingered dawn is changing colour in the east

Like in ancient days we’ll never see again

Once we were together

That I do remember

All the rest is like a letter in the rain

So I go to check my snares

See what night caught unawares

I take the path along the creek again

In the garden of delight

A snake slithered into sight

So we left Eden and headed for the plain

Day by day and night by night she never left my side

Now she never wants to see my face again

Once we spoke in love’s low tongue

As all the bells at midnight rung

All the rest is like a letter in the rain

There’s a river somewhere up around the bend

When it hurts that river’s always been my friend

The frost has gone now from the hill

like a vision in a dream

You never know when glory will come again

I remember her dark stare

And a braid of nut-brown hair

All the rest is just a letter in the rain

JOSEPHINA

Paul Kelly

Won’t you come out and play, Josephina?

I missed you all yesterday, Josephina

Tell your boss you need the afternoon off

To go and visit a sick friend

You know it wouldn’t be a lie, oh, not at all untrue

‘Cause I’m down with a fever for you

I love your sweet hip shake thing, Josephina

The out of tune way you sing, Josephina

I love the light and dark inside your eyes

And the waves of your laughter

I love your sudden clutch that says “Oh baby put on the brake!”

Just before your body starts to shake

To the market I’ll go, Josephina

Buy some fresh fish for us both, Josephina

I’m gonna cook you up a red hot meal

We’ll eat it on the verandah

And later on we’ll play some old sweet and ragged tunes

And dance under the light of the moon

I’ll get a job really soon, Josephina

I know that’s what you want me to do, Josephina

I’ll save my money and I’ll buy an old car

We’ll head on up to the islands

I hear they’re taking lotsa people on all summer long

And when it’s over we’ll keep moving along

Won’t you come over here, Josephina

This old world is good when you’re near, Josephina

I know some people say you should beware

I’m a ne’er-do-well time waster

But I know your mother likes me and I like her too

Oh, she’s the spitting image of you

DON’T EXPLAIN

Paul Kelly

Don’t explain

It’s really not your style

I’ve had some fun

You really made me smile

Don’t look so serious

It doesn’t suit your face

Don’t explain, don’t explain

You sure know

How to use your hands

But you don’t have a great attention span

Don’t apologise

Or drop your eyes

Don’t explain, don’t explain

I’ve seen them come, I’ve seen them go

Boys like you

Their gangster hearts, their dreamy loads

Boys like you

So take your things

I won’t count the days

Sure you can call me

If you pass this way

But if one night you’re lonely

And I have other company

Don’t complain, don’t complain

I SMELL TROUBLE

Paul Kelly

Trouble, I smell trouble

Trouble, coming on down the line

Trouble, I smell trouble

Trouble, that old friend of mine

All I gotta do is step aside

Why can’t I?

All I gotta do is step aside

Why can’t I?

This ain’t no blindside

I’m just mesmerised

Ain’t no blindside

I’m just mesmerised

Trouble, I smell trouble

Trouble, coming on down the line

Trouble, I smell trouble

Trouble, that old friend of mine

Ain’t no blindside

I’m just mesmerized

Ain’t no blindside

I’m just mesmerised

Everybody says – Man, just walk away

Why don’t I?

Everybody says – Man, just walk away

Why can’t I?

Trouble, I smell trouble

Trouble, coming on down the line

Trouble, I smell trouble

Trouble, that old friend of mine

PETRICHOR

Paul Kelly

It hasn’t rained six months or more

Until today, a sudden pour

Now I can smell the petrichor outside

The sighing ground gives up its love

Unto the breeze and trees above

And suddenly your phantom shoves my side

I don’t need you

I don’t need you

I don’t need you

Oh, but I sure want you

I never loved you more than when

I turned and walked into the wind

And left you leaning on no friend of mine

I walked straight, didn’t turn my head

The hardest thing I ever did

Seabirds wheeling overhead and cryin’

I don’t need you

I don’t need you

I don’t need you

O, but I sure want you

I wish I knew the names of things

Trees and flowers, birds that sing

You’re much better at that kind of thing than I

And I don’t know these stars up here

You’d fill me in if you were near

You taught me ‘petrichor’, our secret sigh

I don’t need you

I don’t need you

I don’t need you

O, but I sure want you

LIFE IS FINE

Lyrics by Langston Hughes, music by Paul Kelly

I went down to the river

I set down on the bank

I tried to think but couldn’t

So I jumped in and sank

I came up once and hollered!

I came up twice and cried!

If that water hadn’t a-been so cold

I might’ve sunk and died

But it was cold in that water! It was cold!

I took the elevator

Sixteen floors above the ground

I thought about my baby

And thought I would jump down

I stood there and I hollered!

I stood there and I cried!

If it hadn’t a-been so high

I might’ve jumped and died.

But it was high up there! It was high!

So since I’m still here livin’

I guess I will live on

I could’ve died for love

But for livin’ I was born

Though you may hear me holler,

And you may see me cry

I’ll be dogged, sweet baby

If you’re gonna see me die.

Life is fine! Fine as wine! Life is fine!
