Spring and Fall – 2012

NEW FOUND YEAR

Come with me, love, bring your wine, love

Set it by the bed

First we’ll clink and then we’ll drink

To toast the year that’s fled

Outside all the horns are blaring

The midnight bells have rung

On this our first new year and love so young

Slip your shoes off, let me help your dress

Down to the floor

There’s no treasure on this earth now

Not inside this door

Every weather, heat and chills, and spring and fall and rain

And on the air all spice again

Oh my India, my new found land

My America, come take my hand

January, February, we will seek our ground

March and April, May and June and July, dig deeper down

August and September, sweet October – that’s when we met

November and December – I know I’ll never forget

Oh my India, my new found land

My America, for you I stand

And now, my love, come prove our love

Before, behind, between, above

Below!

Oh my India, my new found land

My America, come take my hand

Oh my India, my brave new land

My America, for you I stand

Oh my India, my new found land

My America, I’m your new man

WHEN A WOMAN LOVES A MAN

When a woman loves a man it’s stronger than the sun

So unfolds the hidden plan that won’t stop once begun

Her light comes shining

Inside him little tender blooms expand

When a woman loves a man

Ever since the world began

When a woman gives herself she goes out on a limb

Her body cannot help but tell the story that’s within

She pours her trust in him

And all she asks is that he understands

The gift he holds in his hands

When a woman loves aman

Water carving out a canyon

Sure gets deeper over time

A woman’s love seeks its companion

As freshwater seeks the brine

Her streams, hills and valleys

Her sweet home – the whole damn country in the palm of his hand!

Springtime all across the land

When a woman loves a man

Ever since the world began

When a woman loves a man

Get ready for the tender plan

When a woman loves a man

FOR THE AGES

Darling, you’re one for the ages

I’m glad you live here in mine

Your face and figure belong

To centuries been and gone

Those Renaissance and Roman times

Darling, you’re one for the ages

Long may you live in my rhyme

The years will cut us down

But they won’t keep us in the ground

Out of the grave we’ll climb

Darling, you’re one for the ages

You’ll never go out of style

You walked into the ball

Dressed by St Vincent de Paul

With that shy and serious smile

Darling, you’re one for the ages

Your beauty suits every clime

There’s a mystery deep within

And in the light upon your skin

I could study for all time

Darling, you’re one for the ages

Darling, you’re one for the ages

Darling, you’re one for the ages

GONNA BE GOOD

I’m gonna be good from now on

I’m gonna be good

I’m gonna be good from now on

I’m gonna be good

I wrote a list, I thought it best

Of all that must apply

I wrote a list, it didn’t take long

I’m gonna be good from now on

I’m gonna be good

My sweet brothers, my sisters all

They’re standing by

They’ve been delighted, they’ve been appalled

I’m gonna be good from now on

I’m gonna be good

Like Big John says in his song

You gotta walk the line

The line is narrow, the line is long

I’m gonna be good from now on

I’m gonna be good

I’m gonna do right from now on

I’m gonna do right

SOMEONE NEW

I just want to sleep with someone new

Someone I’ve never met

Knowing it’s a foolish thing to do

And sure to cause regret

There is no reason to do our love wrong

When we’re together it’s sweet and strong

It’s where I belong

But I just want to sleep with someone new

Who doesn’t know my name

Who comes and takes my hand out of the blue

Just like in a dream

Pass any doorway, ride any train

Walk into any room – beauty stakes its claim

And drives it home again and again and again

I just want to sleep with someone else

Touch some different skin

To do or not to do is both ways false

But one’s a greater sin

I’m not about to tear this house down

And I couldn’t stand to sneak around

And lose this love I’ve found

So daily I will make her someone new

TIME AND TIDE

Time and tide wait for no-one

And they won’t wait for you or me

You got to know

When to stay and when to go

When to do, when to be

Time and tide sometimes hurry

Sometimes move so slow

You got to be ready

To jump or hold steady

A-rocking and a-rolling with the flow

No matter what you think or do

Sometimes it really isn’t up to you

You just got to get out of the way!

And if you can’t shift at all

There’s nothing you can do at all but pray

Time and tide keep on pushing and pulling

Pushing and pulling on you and me

Sometimes our flood runs high

Sometimes we’re both left bone dry

Dreaming of the deep blue sea

SOMETIMES MY BABY

Sometimes my baby goes away

In the blink of an eye on an ordinary day

I’m right there beside her but all at a loss

No way to reach her, no way to get across

Was it something I did? Was it something I said?

She lies on the bed with her face to the wall

Oh, it’s breaking my heart and it’s doing my head

To see her tumble and fall

Sometimes my baby takes a little trip

She gives me no warning, just gives me the slip

I hold her and kiss her and whisper her name

But she’s somewhere else, I’m right out of the frame

Oh, it’s nothing I’ve done and it’s nothing I’ve said

Nothing to do with my loving at all

I wish I could take out the knives in her head

Like a stone in a pond she falls

I listen all night to the sound of the sea

The tide inches out and the tide inches in

I follow the moon sinking down through the trees

Until she rises again

COLD AS CANADA

Morning comes creeping in

Like a sick and pale child

She leaves him there sleeping in

No good way to say goodbye

She turns her face to the sun

She doesn’t have tears to cry

She wonders at what she’s done

No good way to say goodbye

Out of the eater, something to eat

Out of the strong, something sweet

She’s out of shelter

She’s as cold as Canada

She gives herself a talking to

She keeps the blood in her eye

She knows what she has to do

No good way to say goodbye

She’s cold as Canada

What she needs she cannot buy

Oh, do what you can for her

No good way to say goodbye

She’s cold as Canada

She’s cold as Canada

I’M ON YOUR SIDE

You’ve been crying a long long spell

You’ve been drinking from the Devil’s own well

You’re just hanging on to your pride

Oh, hold on to me now

I’m on your side

I’m on your side when you think there’s no-one

I’m on your side when darkness falls

I’m on your side

All you gotta do is call

The trees on the shoreline are all fresh from the rain

The ship on the water’s heading for the main

Open your window, let the good air inside

You don’t always know when

There’s a change in the tide

I’m on your side when others turn on you

I’m on your side when your back’s to the wall

I’m on your side

All you gotta do is call

I’m on your side though you might not believe it

I’m on your side when the shit rains down

I’m on your side

I’m gonna stand your ground

Stand your ground

Call on me

All you gotta do is call

NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS NOW

Send me no more letters

Nor ask me how I’m going

It might make you feel better

But it’s none of your business knowing

It’s none of your business now

You say you regret it

And hope we can be friends

You really just don’t get it

None of this business can mend

And it’s none of your business now

Once we had the real thing

Nothing could compare

But it was really nothing

A hell of a business yeah yeah

And none of our business now

So go and find another

Or write a stupid song

To help yourself get over

You’re none of my business – so long!

You’re none of my business now

Oh, please don’t send me letters

Or knock upon my door

I’m on the way to better

I’m none of your business no more

I’m none of your business now

LITTLE ACHES AND PAINS

Thanks for your letter and your kind words of comfort

It’s good to hear from you again

I’m going ok, taking it day by day

You know what they say “Can’t complain”

It’s just these little aches and pains

I got ‘em always now, sunshine or rain

It must be nice up there on the river

Maybe I could visit, I haven’t had a trip in a while

There’s nothing much keeping me here

I see the gang maybe once or twice a year

You and me, we could walk a rambling country mile

Test out these little aches and pains

When all else goes, they remain

Disabled we’re born, disabled we die

Is that a cliché? I’ll make it one!

And hope it doesn’t get too creaky

I have found that what you don’t know WILL hurt you

And what doesn’t kill you makes you weaker

Gives you little aches and pains

I got ‘em always now, sunshine or rain

Oh, these little aches and pains

I don’t count my losses now, just my gains
